Just this morning or so I was thinking about this. The best recommendation
is to check out the VSOHP website:

http://www.satobs.org/orbsoft.html

There you will find links to beaucoup programs. I typically use
Rob Matson's Skymap because I like the star reference maps. It
works really well with my telescope obs of faint objects. I also
use other programs for cases where they fulfill a purpose better.

Many folks use Mike McCant's Quicksat. I have heard good comments
about Spysat.

Realistically, you will have to try several to see what you like.
And expect that you may change as you decide what you really want
to do.

If you have questions about setting up Skymap, I can help. Others
here can help with Quicksat and probably most of the programs
available. Don't let initial program "complexity" scare you.
