That low on the horizon, you may have been looking at the horizon. I've looked out on really dark nights and when you can't see the horizon, it's tough to judge altitude. When I'm at OBX, I like to look out over the ocean at night to watch the sky and frequently see ship lights that initially appear higher then they really are.
