Dale's speculation that he may have seen a bright flash from a tumbling Iridium
sat appears to be correct. His obs report is here:

    http://www.satobs.org/seesat/Oct-2001/0016.html

I checked for objects within 2 minutes of the time and 10 deg of the position,
and this was the only likely match:

    Iridium 27 tum 4.0 1.8 0.0 6.4 d 7.68
    1 24947U 97051D 01273.13075110 .00085780 00000-0 18734-2 0 9824
    2 24947 86.6070 126.8697 0004401 130.5105 229.6568 15.43868178223587

It passed within 20 s of time and 1 deg of the reported observation, and it was
    heading south, as reported.
