    Not really, that would mean that many rocket bodies and debris would get an
    A designation and that isn't the case.  Most payloads get the first
    designations.
    
    However, the first satellite beeing catalogued was not Sputnik 1 but its
    rocket !
    
    rocket=1957-alpha1(now 1957-1A)
    Sputnik 2= 1957-alpha2(now 1957-1B)
    
    So strictly spoken, the first satellite was its rocket and not the
    payload(chicken and egg question here)
