    Hmmm...  Could it be that the 'protrusion' is a jagged edge created by 
    the loss of the preceding portion, which would connect that 'edge' to 
    the fuselage?
    
    When that [missing] portion is intact it would smoothen/erase the 
    'protruding' area?
    
    We would then be talking about a sizable chunk.
