Certainly the first piece I observed detached while Columbia was to the west of me. While any such debris that fell before the main breakup would be much harder to find (assuming any actually reached the Earth), these pieces I would guess would be much more valuable in the determination of what exactly happened so some effort may be expended in trying to locate these. Or at least the public ought to be informed of the possibility. I'm wondering if some of the loss of the various sensor readings is tied to the debris separation. Rick Baldridge's observation and mine have debris separation correlated in time to the minute level (as best as I know about) with some of sensor dropouts.
