Probably because they weren't fully aware of any early disintegration (if
there really was one, that is). Also it is clear that the bulk of debris
did come down in the Texas/Louisiana arena, so we're probably talking about
very very few pieces spread over a really huge area. Lots of desert there in
the west under the re-entry trajectory, needle in the haystack. But then,
latest press briefings mention an extension of the search area further west
towards Fort Worth, so while this still seems to be intended to cover the
bulk debris field, they certainly have become aware of more debris west of
where they are searching now.

Inproper searching, no clue what to search for, high-velocity impact of a
really tiny piece (small piece, huge hole), bigmouthing, bounty hunters...
