A blocking anticyclone has built over Scandinavia, which hasn't happened much in recent winters. It means that cold air from Russia and points east spreads westwards over the UK. It picks up moisture from the North Sea, and blankets the UK in low cloud. Overcast then for a week or more (or am I being a pessimist again?). David.
